Character.AI spreads your time across many characters and chats. That’s great for variety, but continuity with any one character depends on staying in the same chat and on how the platform carries context forward. Voice, images and extras #

Both offer voice calls. Replika adds selfies and an avatar you customize. Character.AI has been adding entertainment features, such as short studio-made interactive series and comics, alongside its character chats and multi-user chat rooms.

Price #

Both are free to start. Character.AI’s c.ai+ is listed at $9.99 a month on the US App Store, with annual and lower-priced options such as Character.AI Lite also listed. Replika lists subscriptions from $7.99 up to $89.99 depending on tier and term, plus optional gem packs. Check the current price in your app store before subscribing, since both change plans from time to time.

Privacy and data #

Both apps process your chats on their servers. Their App Store privacy labels cover similar ground: Character.AI lists third-party advertising, developer marketing, analytics, product personalization and app functionality. Replika lists identifiers and usage data as “Data Used to Track You”.

Replika has more regulatory history. Italy’s data protection authority ordered it to stop processing Italian users’ data in February 2023 and fined its developer €5 million in April 2025 over its legal basis for processing, its privacy policy and missing age verification. Character.AI was among seven companies that received FTC orders in September 2025 asking how AI companions affect children and teens.

Safety and age rules #

Character.AI removed open-ended chat for users under 18 in late 2025. It now uses its own age assurance, including an in-house age estimation model, and points users to crisis resources through partners. It has faced lawsuits from families of teens who used the platform. Replika is rated 18+, and Italy’s regulator faulted its lack of age verification during the period it investigated.
