Character.AI’s free tier lets you chat with its huge library of user-made characters and create your own. The c.ai+ subscription, listed at $9.99 a month on the US App Store, adds faster responses, skips waiting rooms and gives priority support. Its App Store privacy label includes third-party advertising, so the free tier is partly supported by ads and data.
Good free pick if you want variety and don’t mind a cloud app. Character.AI is rated 18+ on the App Store and removed open-ended chat for users under 18 in 2025.
Talkie: free anime and story characters #
Talkie, from MiniMax, offers a free tier with a large library of anime and fictional characters, roleplay scenarios and decision-based simulator games. Talkie+ is the paid upgrade. It also provides tools to export and delete your data.

Replika’s free tier gives you one companion as a friend. Other relationship types, and many extras, require a subscription, listed on the App Store from $7.99 to $89.99 depending on tier and term. Its privacy label lists identifiers and usage data as used to track you.

Nomi: a free start, then paid #
Nomi advertises a free start with no credit card required, but its memory, group chats and voice features are designed around the paid plans, from $9.99 a month on the App Store.
Good free pick if you want to try Nomi before paying. As a long-term free option, it’s the most limited here.
Xin: free on-device AI with an energy bar #
Xin is unusual because running the AI costs its developer nothing per message: the model runs on your phone. So almost everything is free: all 75+ companions, creating your own, the memory journal, and offline chat with the free model, Xin Core (a one-time 1.3 GB download that needs about 3 GB of RAM). What’s limited is pace:
- Energy. You start with 100, and each message costs 5, so a full bar is 20 messages. It refills by about one point every three minutes, which is roughly five hours from empty to full.
- Refills. Watching an optional rewarded ad adds 80 energy, or you can spend 15 gems on a full refill.
- Inner thoughts. Reading a character’s hidden thoughts is free three times per chat, then costs gems.
- Ads. A banner, an occasional full-screen ad while a longer reply is being written, and rewarded videos you choose to watch.
VIP removes the energy limit and ads, adds larger models (if your phone has the RAM), gives unlimited inner thoughts and makes your bond grow 1.5 times faster. It costs $9.99 a week or $99.99 a year in the US. If you do upgrade, do the math: a year of weekly billing is about $519, more than five times the annual plan.
