Most AI chat apps require an account because your conversations run on their servers, and they need a way to tie chats, subscriptions and usage limits to you. The apps that work without an account usually fall into two groups: web assistants with a limited guest mode, and apps that run the AI model directly on your phone. Only the second group keeps your conversations off someone else’s computer.
Why do AI chat apps make you sign up? #
Signing up isn’t only about marketing. An account solves real problems for a cloud service:
- Sync. Your chats follow you from phone to laptop.
- Usage limits. Servers cost money per message, so free tiers are metered per account.
- Abuse prevention. An account makes it harder to evade bans and rate limits.
- Billing and restores. Subscriptions and purchases attach to the account.
- Age checks. Some services use account data or verification steps to keep minors out of adult features.
- Contact. Your email is also how they reach you, for good reasons and for promotional ones.
Each of those is a reason the company holds data about you. An app that doesn’t need an account has to solve these problems differently or skip them.

Is “no account” the same as anonymous? #
Not quite. Even without an account, an app can see:
- Your IP address whenever it connects to the internet.
- Advertising identifiers, if the app shows ads and you’ve allowed tracking.
- Purchase receipts, which are linked to your Apple or Google account on the store side.
- Device and diagnostics data, through analytics or crash reporting tools.

What you give up without an account #
No-account apps are more private, but they come with practical costs:
- No sync. Your chats live on one device.
- Moving phones takes planning. Without a cloud copy, your history moves only through a device backup or a manual export.
- Deleting the app can delete everything. There’s no server copy to restore from.
- No account-based support. If something goes wrong, the developer can’t look up your history, because they don’t have it.
For many people that’s the point. For others, losing a months-long story when they drop their phone in a lake is a real risk worth weighing.
Xin: an AI companion with no sign-up #
Xin is an AI companion app with no sign-up, no login and no email. You open it, enter a display name and your age (the app is for adults 18+ and blocks younger ages at setup), pick a companion and start talking. The AI model runs on your phone after a one-time download of about 1.3 GB, and your chats, companions and memories stay in a local database on the device.
Because there’s no account, a few things work differently:
- VIP restores through the store. A VIP subscription is tied to your App Store or Google Play account, so it comes back on a new phone.
- Companions can be backed up as text. From the Me tab you can copy your companions as a text string and paste it into Xin on another phone. That backup holds the character definitions, not your chats or memories.
- Gems stay on the device. They carry over if you set up a new phone from a device backup, but a fresh install starts over.
The free tier shows ads through Google AdMob, which does use device identifiers and approximate location (with a tracking prompt on iOS). VIP removes the ads.
How to check if an AI app really works without an account #
- Install it and look for a sign-up screen. Some apps let you browse without an account but require one to chat.
- Read the store privacy label. Look for contact info, user content and identifiers.
- Turn on airplane mode. If the app still replies, the model is running on your device.

Can I use an AI chatbot without signing up? #
Yes. Some web assistants offer a limited logged-out mode, and on-device apps typically need no account at all. Guest modes on cloud services still send your messages to the company’s servers, so they’re convenient rather than private.
